Splenda Goes from Safe to Caution after Leukemia Found in Mice

The artificial sweetener Splenda is considered disadvantageous by The Center for Science in the Public Interest

In its chemical guide to food additives, a food safety advocacy group has downgraded its rating for sucralose, the artificial sweetener better known as Splenda, from safe to caution.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is a nonprofit watchdog group, revealed that they were declining their safety rating of sucralose from safe to caution, which means that the mentioned additive may pose a risk and needs to be better tested. (1)

Mice that were fed with Splenda regularly developed leukemia, according to a recent survey done at an independent Italian laboratory. This evidence, being on top of the long list of studies on top of the long list of studies disapproving the use of Splenda, is a major reason the FDA has changed its safety rating.

DNA damage can be a cause of cancer in many cases. A 2002 study showed that Splenda ingestion damaged the DNA of mice. In addition, in a 2008 study, research showed that Splenda ingestion had the potential to kill off necessary bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.

Killing the bacteria can often lead to disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, as it often helps with digestion and fights off invaders. This unpublished study proved that the sucralose can cause leukemia in mice which are exposed before birth. (3)

The CSPI claimed that previously, the only durable animal-feeding studies were done by sucraloses manufacturers.

CSPI suggest that in order to avoid the risks of both sugars and non-caloric sweeteners, users should switch to water, unsweetened iced tea flavored unsweetened waters, seltzer water or seltzer mixed with some fruit juice.

Johnson and Johnson, which markets Splenda, after this information came to light, released a statement that more than 110 studies conducted over the past 20 years have proven the safety of sucralose.
